Regenerative Agriculture

At High Mountain Organics, regenerative farming is the foundation of how we grow. It’s about building soil over time—returning organic matter, supporting microbial life, and creating systems that become more resilient with each season.

For us, soil health is everything. In organic, sun-grown cultivation, the soil directly shapes the quality of the plant—its strength, its terpene expression, and its overall vitality. When the soil is alive, the plant can fully express its genetics and its environment.

Our focus is on giving back to the land in a way that supports long-term fertility and balance. This means working with natural cycles, improving water retention, and fostering biodiversity both above and below the surface.

One of the key ways we’ve chosen to build our soil is through Hügelkultur.

Hügelkultur

Hügelkultur is a method of building raised beds using layers of wood and organic material. At its core, it mimics what happens naturally on a forest floor—where fallen trees slowly break down, feeding the soil and supporting new life.

As the wood decomposes, it becomes porous, holding water like a sponge and releasing it gradually back into the surrounding soil. This creates a more stable moisture environment for plants, especially through dry periods. Over time, the breaking-down wood also adds rich organic matter, feeding soil life and improving structure.

These beds naturally create air pockets as the material settles, allowing for better root development and soil aeration—similar to tilling, but without disturbing the microbial communities that are essential to soil health.

For us, Hügelkultur is a long-term investment. It builds fertility, conserves water, and supports a thriving underground ecosystem—helping us grow stronger, more resilient plants while staying rooted in regenerative principles.
